Parent Code of Conduct
1. About this code
This code explains how every parent and guardian at Mike's Judo Club is expected to behave. It applies at all club sessions, gradings, competitions, training camps and club events, and in club group chats and online. It forms part of the club's 2027 Terms and Conditions.
Parents and guardians play a huge part in helping children enjoy judo and reach their potential. Please read this code alongside the Player Code of Conduct, so that you and your child know what is expected.
Our club ethos
Coach me and I will learn. Challenge me and I will grow. Believe in me and I will win.
The judo moral code
As members of British Judo, we follow the judo moral code. Parents and guardians can show these values too:
| Value | How parents and guardians can show it |
|---|---|
| Courtesy | Be polite to coaches, referees, other parents and every child. |
| Courage | Encourage your child to try new things and keep going when it is hard. |
| Friendship | Welcome new families and help build a friendly club. |
| Honesty | Be fair and truthful, and encourage your child to own up to mistakes. |
| Modesty | Celebrate wins without boasting and accept defeats graciously. |
| Respect | Respect the decisions of coaches and referees, and every child's efforts. |
| Self-control | Stay calm at sessions and competitions, whatever the result. |
| Honour | Set the example you want your child to follow. |
2. Supporting your child
- Enjoyment: support your child's involvement in judo and help them to enjoy it.
- Your own child: focus on your own child's progress and performance, not on that of others.
- The rules: encourage your child to learn the rules of judo and to compete within them.
- Player Code of Conduct: make sure your child understands and follows the club's Player Code of Conduct.
3. Behaviour at sessions and competitions
- A good example: set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding good performances from all players, including those from other clubs.
- Fair play: discourage unfair play and never argue with referees, officials or coaches.
- Language: use appropriate language at all times.
- Equality: oppose discriminatory behaviour and promote equal opportunities for everyone.
4. Respect for coaches and other children
- Our coaches: support the club's coaches in their work to train the children, and let them coach during sessions.
- Other children: never discuss or comment negatively on another child's performance, training or development, with other parents or anyone else.
- Concerns about another child: if you have a concern about another child's welfare, raise it privately with the club's welfare officers rather than with other parents (see section 8).
5. Information, kit and fees
- Emergency and medical details: keep your child's emergency contacts and medical information up to date in MyMA.
- Competition kit: make sure your child has the correct judogi with the Mike's Judo Club logo for competitions.
- Fees: pay all fees on time, in line with the club's 2027 Terms and Conditions.
6. Competitions, coaches and other clubs
To protect our players and the club's coaching programme, parents and guardians must not:
- Competition entries: enter your child into competitions or events yourself. All entries are made by the club.
- Other coaches: invite coaches from other martial arts clubs to watch or observe club training.
- Other clubs: take your child to visit or train at another judo club.
7. Phones, photos and online
- Photos and videos: only take photos or videos of your own child. Never photograph or film other children without their parent's permission, and never in changing areas or toilets.
- Online: be respectful in club group chats and on social media. Do not post anything that could upset or embarrass a child, a family, a coach or the club.
8. Speaking up
If you have any concerns about your child's or another child's safety or wellbeing, please speak to or email one of the club's welfare officers. All concerns are treated seriously and in confidence.

You can also contact British Judo's safeguarding team through the British Judo website. If a child is in immediate danger, always call 999.
9. If the code is broken
This code promotes good spectator behaviour and a positive environment for every child. If a parent or guardian does not follow it, the club will take action. Depending on how serious the behaviour is, the club may:
| Step | What happens | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | An apology | The parent or guardian is asked to apologise for their behaviour. |
| 2 | A warning | The parent or guardian receives a verbal or written warning. |
| 3 | Suspension | The parent or guardian is suspended for a fixed time from attending club training sessions and events. |
| 4 | Competition ban | The parent or guardian is barred from attending domestic and/or national competitions. |
| 5 | Leaving the club | The family is required to leave the club, in line with section 7 of the 2027 Terms and Conditions. |
For serious behaviour, such as abuse towards a coach, official or child, or a safeguarding concern, the club may go straight to a later step.
10. Our promise
By agreeing to the club's terms when registering in MyMA, I confirm that I have read and agree to follow the Mike's Judo Club Parent and Guardian Code of Conduct, and I understand the action that may be taken if I do not.
